In the United States, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), if passed by Congress, will be signed on January 21-22 of 2009. Further information on the Act can be found at Fight FOCA.
The FOCA is an horrific piece of legislation. If made a law, virtually all limitations on abortion will be lifted, which will result in the following:
- All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals would be required to perform abortions upon request. If this were to happen, some US Bishops have indicated they would consider closing down Catholic hospitals rather than perform abortions - more than 30% of all hospitals in the United States are Catholic.
- Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.
- All US tax payers would be funding abortions.
- Parental notification will no longer be required.
The Act would enshrine abortion as a basic human right, so that not performing or soliciting abortions would become illegal in some cases. The Act also transfers ultimate control over the lives of the unborn to the Obama administration. It opens the law to future amendments which could force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (e.g. disabled babies) and could even regulate how many children a woman is allowed to have.

There is a group - Operation Rescue - I believe they are located in DC, that is organizing 100 days of Rosaries for the unborn for the first 100 days of Obama's Presidency.
